Six out of Six
Yesterday I attended the 45th
Annual Quirindi Prime Stock Exhibition. This two day event has become a mecca
for NSW
schools with 260 students from 16 schools, from Glen Innes in the north to
Wellington in the south and Narromine in the west competing in the Paraders
Competition.
Champion Parader was Ashleigh
Mackander whose parents run a commercial Limousin cross herd at Coolah NSW.
A total of 90 steers and heifers
were also exhibited in six classes under judge Mathew George.
Limousin or Limousin cross cattle
won all six classes and took 12 of the 18 Class ribbons.
They also took out both the Junior
and Senior Championships with the Junior Champion going on to become the Grand
Champion.
NSW. The steer was bred by Hilton Carrigan from the Scone area and purchased
out of the saleyards by agent Jim
McCallum for St Josephs School. The combination of a good breeder, an agent
with a keen eye and excellent preparation
by the school produced an excellent steer.
Senior Champion steer was a black
Limousin paraded by the Piper family from Breeza NSW.
Class placings were as follows:
Junior Steer under 360 kg
1st Limousin X Angus;
Calrossy School
2nd Limousin X Murray
Grey; Narromine High School
3rd Limousin X Char/Ang;
Gloucester High School
Junior Steer 411 kg and over
1st Limousin X Angus; St
Josephs High School
2nd Limousin X Ang/Her;
Ashleigh Mackander
3rd Limousin X Angus;
Quirindi High School
Junior Heifer under 410 kg
1st Limousin X Angus;
Chad Williamson
3rd Limousin X Angus;
BWSC Umina High
Open Led Steer under 410 kg
1st Limousin X Angus; Calrossy
School
3rd Limousin X
Angus/Simmental; BWSC Umina High
Open Led Steer or Heifer 411 kg and
over
1st Black Limousin; Piper
Family
When sold at auction the top priced
steer was the Grand Champion at 450 c/kg carcase weight. Assuming a
dressing percentage of 60 percent this steer should return just on $1,500.
Top priced heifer was a Limousin X Angus
from BWSC Umina High which made 440 c/kg carcase weight.
Results of carcase judging will be
in next week's newsletter.
A two day workshop for WA members will be held on Saturday
15th and Sunday 16th October at Narrogin Agricultural
College. The program is similar to that for the successful workshop run at
Quirindi earlier this year and will also involve
a visit to a nearby feedlot on the second day.
It is probably a little too far for members from
the eastern states to attend but we are hoping for a good attendance of
WA members.
A detailed program is available from the ALBS
office and bookings should be made with WA Secretary Dianne Lyster
ph/fax 08 9883 8292.
