Newsletter for the week ending 2 December 2005

Life is a bit hectic in the office today so this newsletter will be a little short and a little late. Not that there is not lots of good news again this week.

Beef Prices Holding Up

Beef prices are holding up well with the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator at 369 c/kg carcase weight and the price of chilled Grassfed Full sets for Japan at 574 c/kg – up by about 150 c/kg on the price in August/September. With good rains over recent months there is also very strong demand for breeding females, especially if they are Limousins!

Nine Limousin cows with calves at foot topped the Fabulous Females Sale at Orange (NSW) selling for $1,640 to the Williams family 'Newton-Wood' at Murrumbateman. Vendor was David Sanderman from Larras Lee (NSW). In this sale, Charolais cows with calves made $1,580, Angus cows with calves made from $1,240 to $1,430 and Murray Grey cows with calves made $1,120 to $1,180.

At Nowra (NSW) Limousin cows with calves also topped the market at $1,525. Angus cows with Charolais calves made $1,350 while most of the 'good quality' cows with calves sold for $1,150 to $1,400. In the same sale joined Limousin Cross heifers sold for $975 compared to joined Angus heifers which made $750.

Top Vealers

Another top sale at Nowra was for five Limousin X Angus vealers account Woodbrook Partnership of Jamberoo and sold by AJ Campbell & Sons. Weighing 345kg they made 247 c/kg or $831.

Calrossy does it Again

Calrossy School at Tamworth have regular success in steer shows and often with Limousin. This time they cleaned up the lightweight section of the Northern Schools Competition with a 9 ½ month purebred Limousin Steer which was Champion on the Hoof and on the Hook.

The steer bred by Peter Reid of the Top River Limousin Stud at Tamworth was 394 kg live weight and dressed at 250.5 kg due to an outstanding dressing percentage of 63.6%. The steer also had an outstanding eye muscle area of 120 sq cm.

Congratulations Anthony

Anthony Rosser, son of Neville and Denice Rosser of Danross Limousins at Lowood (Qld) has been selected in the national Meat Judging Team to compete in the US College Meant Judging Competition in Denver, Colorado. Anthony, who is a student at Gatton Agricultural College, leaves for Denver on 31 December for what will be a great experience. Good luck, Anthony.

Top Priced (Cull) Bull

Ray and Christie Vlietstra sold a 'young cull bull' at Moss Vale on 23 November. At 14 months of age it weighed 585 kg and sold for 182 c/kg or $1,065. Ray said it was close to the top price for a bull in NSW that week (and I believe him).

Gippsland Tops

Kathy Eden from Bass sold 15 mixed sex Limousin X vealers at Packenham last week. 330 kg @ 224.5 c/kg - $762

B Copelin of Seaview sold two Limousin X vealers at Warrangul. 338 kg @ 218.2 c/kg = $834.

John and Margaret Bravington from Newry sold a Limousin X vealer at the same sale; 385 kg @ 215.6 c/kg = $830.

Wasn't so short after all!
