Newsletter
for the week ending 10th July
This morning I have received a genuine enquiry for 250 to
300 pure Limousin steers weighing 260 to 320 kg live weight for export to Korea
in the next six weeks. They must come from the eastern states from Wagga and
below (to ensure they will not react to the blue tongue test). Price has not
been set but it would obviously need to be at or above the current saleyard
prices for this type of steer.
If you have any suitable steers or have clients who may have
suitable steers please let me know ASAP.
If the importer cannot get purebred steers he may take
Limousin cross steers.
John and Rosemary McCarthy's Rosehill Limousin stud had a
very successful day at the Woodford (Qld.) Limousin Feature Show taking out
Supreme Interbreed Bull and Supreme Interbreed Female. And again it was the
McCarthy's outstanding black junior and grand champion Limousin bull Rosehill
Y394 which took the supreme bull award, following on from his supreme
interbreed bull award at Toowoomba Royal this year when he was also calf
champion and grand champion Limousin bull.
To complete the double at Woodford, the McCarthy's took the
interbreed female supreme with their unbeaten show winner Rosehill Tartan 6,
earlier senior and grand champion Limousin female. Tartan 6 was grand champion Limousin female and reserve interbreed
senior female at Gympie earlier this year, where teammate Y394 was junior
champion bull of his breed and reserve junior interbreed bull.
The magnificent lineup of more than 65 Limousin entries was
judged by Glen Perrett, Bowenfels, Nanango, whose incisive comments kept crowd
interest at a high level.
Strong competition was provided by Paul Forman's Oakwood
Stud, Trevor and Sheresse Tramacchi's Tramahler Stud and Graeme and Val Wick's
Hillsborough Stud.

The Tocal Judging
School at Tocal Agricultural College in the Hunter Valley of NSW has been a
long running and successful four day school open to people from all breeds but
has had a very heavy Angus emphasis. This year Len and Val Tomkins of River
Glen Limousins were invited to provide Limousin bulls to give participants the
opportunity of judging bulls with a bit of muscle. Never ones to miss out on
promoting the breed, Len and Val obliged with the four bulls they are preparing
for the upcoming Hunter Valley Sale. Val reports that the bulls were much
admired by quite a few of the 200 odd participants and did the breed no harm at
all.
I have previously reported on the Champions at the Farmfest Led Steer Competition but did not
report the success of the Wilsonton Agricultural Field Studies group who took
out 6 of the 10 classes with predominantly Limousin steers as well as the
Carcase section of the competition with Limousin cross steer. The crossbred
steers shown by Wilsonton were bred by the Donaldson family who operate the
Dunshane Limousin Stud at Oakey Qld. Some of these steers are sure to be
competing in the large Brisbane Royal
Steer Show in early August.
The catalogue for the Northern Limousin Breeder's sale with
55 bulls and 17 females is on the web.
The sale is set for 12 August at the Scone Selling
Complex. Printed catalogues will soon be available from agents McCallum Inglis. The Scone office number is
0265 451211.
A catalogue of 36 bulls from 15 vendors to be offered at the
AgShow Field Days at Toowoomba Qld. on 8th September is also on the
web.
Trevor Renshaw of Lillico in Victoria was paid 252.2 c/kg
liveweight for a Limousin cross steer vealer weighing 400 kg at the Warragul
Vic. saleyards last week. That is $1008.80 while a truck of four Renshaw
vealers produced a sale average of 238.5 c/kg. The price of 252.2 c/kg is being
claimed as a record price for a milk vealer in Victoria with the record previously held by Trevor's
father John with a sale price of 248.6 c/kg. The buyer of the record
priced vealer was Peter Lee of Fresh Cut Butchers based in Melbourne.
Junior member Sean Smartt emailed in to say parents Brett
and Janet topped the Colac Vic market on 30 June with a Limo X milk vealer at
222 c/kg. The calf weighed 370 kg and made $821. The Smartts sold two more
calves weighing 375 kg for 215 c/kg or $806.
Sean operates the Wattlevale Limousin stud at Deans Marsh
and should have a ready buyer for his sale bulls.
I note that in the Wodonga sale last week Limousin steer
vealers from JPF Smith at Urana NSW topped both the steer and heifer vealer
sections at 225 c/kg. The steers weighed 445 kg to hit the magic $1001 and the
heifers weighed 373 kg to make $840
Yours in Limousin
