Newsletter
for the week ending 15th April 2005
I had a phone call from Garry Morrissey who is from Ireland
and in Australia for a couple of months.
He is keen to get a job on a farm and preferably one that runs Limousin
cattle as he has a Limousin herd in Ireland.
If you are looking for a willing worker for a month or two call Garry on
0424 481 448.
The gremlins found their way to the docility EBV for Premier
Cauliflower S3 in lot 94. The correct
docility EBV is –3 not –30 as in the catalogue. The mid parent docility EBV for calves born from the Refstrup
Tabias/ Premier Cauliflower flush will be +12.
Premier Limousins will be offering Premier Guardian Y68 as a
substitution for lot 28, Premier Tabias.
Details for Premier Guardian are listed under lot 28A in the National
Catalogue on the web.
The Gippsland and Southern Promotion Group have a Limousin
promotion stand at the Annual Lardner Field Days for the 31st year
in succession this week. As well as the
bull to be sold as lot 21at the Lardner Sale on 22nd April they have
14 and 16 year old Limousin cross cows with strapping calves on display to
demonstrate the longevity of the breed.
They also have Richard Baker, a highly qualified butcher
from William Anglis School of Catering in Melbourne providing demonstration of
cutting up beef and displaying it- Limousin of course.
I had a phone call from Bruce Gill who said the Limousin
stand is one of the most popular at the field days with strong enquiry for
Limousin bulls over the two days.
Hillsborough Extraspecial and calf have won Supreme Exhibit
at the Proston Show, Champion All Breeds Female at the Murgon Show and Champion
All Breeds Female at the Nanango Show.
With a few more shows to go it will be interesting to see if she can
keep her great record up for owners Graeme and Val Wicks.
The Autumn Beef Week Field Days are underway with Tobias
Limousin Stud on display at Forbes today.
Star Burst Limousins at Neville near Blayney are on display tomorrow.
On Sunday Beaumont Limousins and Gladstone Limousins in the
Kangaroo Valley together with Longreach Limousins at Marulen are on
display. On Monday Kaludabah Limousins
at Mudgee are open for visitors and on Tuesday the final two studs on display
are Stevens Limousins at Gulgong and Timor Limousins at Coonabarabran.
It is great to see so many Limousin studs out there
promoting themselves and the breed.
The West Moreton Promotion Group offer a generous prize of a
Limousin heifer in the raffle they run in conjunction with the Laidley
Sale. The winners of the Tarampa Downs
heifer this year were Frank and Linda Jewkes of The Rocks NSW who chose to take
the heifer home rather than offer her in the sale. Second prize of $100 went to GEV & JA Nolan of Mayellan
Highlands Farm at Alstonville NSW and third prize of $50 went to Terry Phillips
of Bathurst NSW who kindly donated the prize to the ASPI Inx Foundation. NSW members must have bought a lot of
tickets- or maybe just the lucky ones- as they took home all of the
"loot".
All profits from the raffle go into education programs for
Limousin breeders.
The Weekly Times reported an outstanding sale of Limousin X
milk vealers at Shepparton recently.
The two steer vealers weighed a whopping 450kg and made 246.2 c/kg or
$1,108.
Tas Country recently reported a top sale of Limousin
heifers, which sold for 208 c/kg- topping the Cooee (Tas) sale by 20 c/kg. Owners Annette and Stephen Guard who have
run Limousins on their small Rianna property for 12 years were elated with the
price for the 12mth old heifers weighing 375kg.
Wodonga Sale Toppers
I will not be able to report any more sale toppers from the
large Weekly Wodonga Sale as the selling agents are no longer disclosing the
breed of sale toppers published in their local paper. Is it because of pressure from breeds that rarely feature in sale
toppers, or is it that agents have made some errors in reporting the breed and
don't want to be seen to be wrong?
While prices for slaughter cattle have dropped significantly
in the last two weeks, good money is still being paid for Limousin X cattle at
Warragul (Vic)

Limousin breeders Warren and Carlene Scifleet both went down
for the count last week. Warren had a
major heart attack and Carlene badly strained muscles in her back and arm. The good news is that after being rushed to
Sydney, Warren came out of hospital today and Carlene is also on the mend. We wish them both a speedy recovery.
Yours in Limousin,
Alex McDonald
