Sydney based section of the International Limousin Conference in April 2006.

Tom
Edols and Andrew Norton-Knight reported a complete clearance of 22 cows with
calves at foot and 18 "Z" heifers. The cows topped at $3,100 (twice)
for an average of $2,020 and the heifers topped at $1,800 for an average of
$1,150. Glyn and Anne Williams of Newton-Wood Limousins at Murrumbateman paid
equal top price for Tobias Vixen, with a heifer calf by Tobias Turtle
at foot and Oscar Tolomeo of Mulgoa Valley Limousins at Mulgoa paid the
other top price for Tobias Verbana with a heifer calf by Tobias Wolf at
foot. Volume buyer was Malcolm McDouall from Crookwell who purchased 17 lots
including the top priced heifer Tobias Zeal.
The
Limousin breed had a great showing at the Royal Geelong Show, which
celebrated its 150th year last weekend. They were judged on the Friday by
Ray Vlietstra, and then by six judges in the interbreed competition. Ray
had difficulty splitting the two Bonian heifers for Junior Champion and then,
in the interbreed, the Bonian bull and the Bonian heifer scored the same points
from the six judges with the bull winning on a countback.
James
O'Brien had a very successful day. His 12-month-old bull Bonian
Polled Zeus was named Junior Champion Limousin and then Interbreed Junior
Champion Bull. Bonian Polled Zara, a 12-month-old heifer, was the Junior
Champion Limousin Female and Interbreed Junior Champion Female. Timor Poll
Wag sired both animals. Jame's other heifer, Bonian Polled Zuri, was
the winner of the 8-12 month-old class in the All Breeds Heifer Show.
Brian and Karalyn Keirl won Reserve Junior Champion Bull with Paramount
Ziggy and Reserve Champion Cow with Kaludabah Yelena. Arlington
Wrangler exhibited by Kim Cross was the Senior Champion Female, Grand

Brazil Beef Banned for Foot-and-Mouth (from
Drovers Journal)
The
world’s largest beef exporter announced an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease
last week. The repercussions for that country’s beef industry could be
devastating. Right now, Brazil’s largest buyers, Russia and the European Union,
have suspended imports from the Mato Grosso do Sul state in Brazil. However,
they will continue buying beef from other Brazilian states. Chile has also
suspended imports from that state for the next six months. Uruguay, which
already banned beef on the hoof and bone-in beef, included boneless beef and
pork from Brazil in its ban. South Africa and Israel also suspended imports.
Brazilian beef exports have risen to nearly $2 billion, up 34 percent over the
same nine months last year.
Brazil has the world’s largest commercial cattle herd, totalling
more than 190 million head. The FMD outbreak was believed to be confined to one
herd, with 153 animals infected near the border with Paraguay. Brazilian
officials began slaughtering the entire herd of 582 animals last week. Further
FMD outbreaks would place in jeopardy Brazil’s $3.1 billion beef-export trade.

Breed Associations Create New Registry (from
Drovers Journal)
The
Gelbvieh, Brangus, Limousin, Salers and Red Angus associations in the USA have
created a new company to help commercial producers. The Performance Registry
Services, the working name for the new company, will provide commercial
producers with National Cattle Evaluations delivering a single suite of EPDs
for all the partner breeds on a single base and scale. The idea is to make
crossbreeding easier and more objective. This joint venture of breed
associations will provide Total Herd Reporting and data processing for their
members, while allowing for individual breeds to maintain their own identity.
Along with the multi-breed EPDs will be decision-support software and search
engines and a centralized data warehouse for commercial producers to use these
tools.
This is a major step towards having EPDs (EBVs)
comparable across breeds and great to see the North American Limousin
Foundation at the forefront. We have talked about a similar project in
Australia but made little progress.
Yours in
Limousin
