Newsletter
for the week ending 22nd April 2005
Several of the herds, which were open for the southern NSW
Field Days, have phoned in with reports of strong interest and enquiry.
Barry Nott at Mudgee from Kaludabah Limousins provided the
following report-
The open day
was very successful, with over 40 visitors during the day. This was a big increase on last years open
day at Kaludabah.
Visitors ranged from past buyers, agents, commercial and
fellow Limousin breeders to people wanting to learn more about the Limousin
breed or considering starting their own stud.
It was exciting and pleasing to see the interest in
Limousins, and the fact that people have become more open to using Limousin in
their herds.
On the whole, the increase in attendance was due to the
improvement in perception of the Limousin breed's temperament. Unfortunately, some people continue to
believe that Limousins have a temperament problem. That is why it is important to continue to promote the breed at
events such as this, so people can see the improvement first hand.
There was strong interest in the Limousin section of the
Wodonga All Breeds Sale last week. 19
of the 21 bulls sold to a top of $4,800 and an average of $2,808. A draft of four bulls from Charles and Vicky
Carmichael's Timor Limousin Stud included the top priced bull and averaged
$3,975. A draft of 11 bulls from
Estelle Park Limousins at Coleambally NSW topped at $3,200 and averaged $2,618.
In the same sale 16 Herefords averaged $2,116 and 56 Angus
averaged $2,090
A pen of Red Angus/ Limousin steers has won the champion pen
of three award in the Virbac Australian National Field Days National Grass Fed
Steer competition.
The final awards, made last Saturday evening, saw the entry
from Ted and Barbara Wilcox, "Old Bolong", Golspie, near Crookwell,
presented with the John Sharpe Perpetual Trophy for the highest point
score. Their pen of three scored 647.6
points of a possible 825. The team also
won the Central West Region Limousin Group trophy for the most successful
Limousin- infused entry.
In the supermarket trade category with a target carcass
weight of 230 to 250 kilograms, the Wilcox team was judged second on the hoof,
first in the carcass competition (140.6 points), and second for their 69.4 cent
yield of saleable red meat.

Another small error in the National Catalogue is that the
genetic package offered by GH & JM Stevens as lot 93 consists of two
packages of two embryos not three packages.
There will not be a newsletter next week as I will be at the
National Show and Sale followed by the Dinner on Friday evening and a Board
meeting over the weekend.
I look forward to catching up with as many members as
possible at the National next week.
Yours in Limousin,
Alex McDonald
