EYCI slips
The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator
slipped 8 cents to 406 c/kg carcase weight this week. However prices are still
very
strong both for finished cattle and store cattle.
The Land this week reported that the
top priced steer weaners at the 2600 head Adelong store sale were Limousin
X
Angus steers from W. R. & H. M. Heffer, Deloraine Tarcutta at $796 for
20 head. Limousin X Shorthorn heifers made
$655 for 10 head from Steve Glynn of Batlow.
The outlook for the rest of this year
is still bright according to the MLA Livestock Weekly although prices may
recede
in 2006 especially if the US returns to the Japanese market.
As reported below South Korea is
continuing it’s ban on US beef for the foreseeable future.
South Korea unlikely
to lift U.S. beef ban this year (from Drovers Journal)
Because of Washington's delay in providing records relating
to a case of BSE confirmed earlier this year,
South Korea is unlikely to resume imports of U.S. beef this year. An official
at the South Korean Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said they had expected
to receive details of the case by the end of June but haven’t received them
yet. The ministry said animal quarantine experts would convene once the data
was received. The main issues of concern include the age of the infected cow,
how it might have contracted the disease, the kind of feed it consumed and
an examination of its herdmates. South Korea was one of the largest importers
of U.S. beef before BSE was discovered in 2003; they imported 199,443 tons
of beef from the U.S. that year.
A reminder to all breeders that the 15th Annual Hunter
