Over 100 competitors from five different states made the journey to Pittsworth on September 25-27 for the hands-on Queensland Limousin Youth Camp.

There were plenty of participants from all areas of South East Queensland in attendance, as well as from Dubbo and Muswellbrook in New South Wales, Victoria, and one person from both Western Australia and South Australia.

Coordinator Paul Foreman, Little Rock Limousins, Pittsworth, said what makes the Queensland Limousin Youth Camp so attractive is the hands on and educational approach.

“We do a rotational program so everyone gets the opportunity to learn a variety of skills. This year we had a number of industry identities on hand to help out,” Mr Foreman said.

Participants at the QLD Limousin Youth Camp

Pauline Grant demonstrated washing and grooming, Travis Luscombe discussed animal selection, auctioneer Neil Goetsch covered reproduction including AI techniques, Allen Jones talked about parasites within cattle, Michael O’Sullivan taught rope making, Graeme Wicks gave a judging and selection tutorial, Jamie Hollis gave a clipping demonstration, and Paul Forman spoke on show ring etiquette.

The youth show also includes cattle judging, and this year the led steer or heifer competition was judged by former Queensland Limousin youth ambassador Brent Evans from Jen-Daview Limousins, Kingaroy. He awarded the champion steer to AT Gizmo, an 11-month-old purebred Limousin exhibited by Adam and Kahlia Williamson, AT Limousins, Ballandean.

AT Gizmo was paraded by Destiny Perrett from Muswellbrook in New South Wales. Mac Mulligan from Greenslopes Limousins, Pittsworth, paraded the reserve champion steer.

In the stud section, it was Julie Iseppi from Ellendale Red Simmentals, Lowood, who called the shots. She judged Oakwood Black Sable, exhibited by Paul and Kelli Forman, Oakwood Limousins, Bundaberg, to be the grand champion female. The 17-month-old heifer was paraded by Hayden Beresford, Bony Villa, Biggenden.

The grand champion bull went to eight-month-old Jen-Daview Leopold, exhibited by Corey Evans, Jen-Daview Limousins, Kingaroy. The Evans family bred Leopold themselves, and he will be the family’s lead junior bull on next year’s show circuit.

Competitors were able to test their auctioneering skills at the annual charity auction, which this year raised $9766 for the Queensland Limousin Society. Other highlights included Jase Lamborn from Toowoomba taking out the highly regarded Jean Plaisted Memorial award for the Limousin Society’s herdsperson competition, and Corey Evans being announced as the 2015 Queensland Limousin youth ambassador.
