Item LinkCountry-wide interest for the Summit Livestock Spring Selection Sale
Summit Livestock held their fifth Spring Selection Online Sale on AuctionsPlus in October 2023. Despite the depressed commercial market conditions and lack of rain across many parts of the eastern seaboard, interest in the sale was still strong.
An elite line of yearling heifers sired by Anchor B Gold Rush and SYES Easy Going sold to a full clearance to breeders across QLD, NSW and Victoria. The heifer draft topped at $5,250 for Lot 5 – Summit Meadowgrass T60, one of the first SYES Easy Going progeny to be sold in Australia, to Carrungi Limousins in Victoria.
There was also strong interest in the genetic packages on offer, with lots selling to every state in Australia. The embryo lots topped at $1,300, for a package out of Summit’s leading donor Meadowgrass H39 and bred to the outstanding new US sire RUNL Justified, to Rodham Livestock, NSW. Semen packages also sold well with the Limousin semen lots topping at $170/straw for ROMN Made to Order, to Morrisvale Limousins in WA. Packages offered on new sires RUNL Justified and Summit First Fleet S41 were also well sought after.
Even with the current tempered market conditions and weak season outlook for many parts of the country, it is refreshing to see there is still plenty of confidence to invest in Limousin genetics, with the lots offered providing buyers with good value.
Vendors Hayden & Jasmine Green would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported this year’s sale and are looking forward to some exciting developments in the pipeline for the 2024 sale event.
PERTH ROYAL SHOW TRADE CATTLE REPORT
Winston the steer was kindly donated by Barry and Cathy Burgess to the Black Dog Ride charity and prepared by Peter and Judy Milton, long time supporters of the Black Dog Ride. Winston came up against a strong team in his class but set a sale record price for a steer at the Perth Show of $16600. Barry, Peter and Judy were ringside for the sale and were excited with the result, grateful for the support from their team and Harvey Beef for purchasing the steer with all proceeds going to a very worthy cause.
The Rob Milner Trophy- for a Group of 3 purebred steers
Limousin continued the dominance of the breed in this competition across Australia with another win. The steers bred by James and Casey Morris and now owned by the Denmark Agricultural College who prepared and presented them came out on top of an impressive line up of quality teams representing all the top breeds.
On the Hoof in the open competition Limousin cross steers won Champion Lightweight, Reserve Champion Lightweight, Champion Mediumweight, Reserve Champion Mediumweight, Reserve Grand Champion and Reserve Champion Heavyweight. A dominant and consistent result for the breed across all weight ranges.
From the Corby family, we wish to say a humble thank you to the successful purchases of the 2023 Graduates of Goldstein Park Sale.
With the softening of cattle prices and deteriorating seasonal conditions, we understand the factors which may be influencing buyer behaviours. Despite this, we are proud to see all our sale lots heading into stud herds across the country, indicating confidence in the Goldstein Park breeding program.
It was encouraging to see Limousin breeders invest strongly in our newest walking stud sire Warrawindi PRIMEMOVER P32 who is admired for his complete phenotype and a data set with 14 traits in the top 10% of the breed. Primemover is now also reinforcing credibility through his progeny with the recent success of Warrawindi To Hot To Handle T2, being sashed Junior Champion Limousin Heifer and Supreme Interbred Junior Champion Heifer, exhibited by Aruma Limousins at the 2023 Melbourne Royal Limousin Feature Show.
We wish to also congratulate the Said family of Elberta Limousins for securing our feature lot, Goldstein Park Show Time S74 who will be an exciting stud sire addition for their breeding program.
What a fabulous show! So many lovely cattle, a terrific gathering of Limousin breeders and excellent results.
Limousins made a huge impact in this our 50th year of contributing to improved beef production in Australia.
Most of the results and photos were uploaded to the Limousin Australia Facebook page as they occurred, but are listed below for those that do not use Facebook.

In the beautiful South Western Australian countryside, something special happened in March this year at the Brunswick Showgrounds Selling Complex. It was the inaugural Balamara Limousin and Angus Bull Sale, that brought together commercial breeders, stud breeders, stock agents and cattle enthusiasts. Of the 24 bulls offered, 16 were sold to buyers locally and nationally and a nice touch was that Balamara provided free transport.
Features of the sale
One of the standout features of this sale was its emphasis on genetic diversity, with the intention to meet the contemporary needs and expectations of commercial and stud breeders. Balamara stud principal Michael Mamo, together with partners John and Misha Mamo, collaborated with leading experts in genetics and animal health to ensure that the bulls offered were truly exceptional. This venture was not solely about selling cattle; it was a commitment to aiding fellow breeders in elevating the quality of their herds. In addition, a prevailing sense of community was felt at the event. Attendees engaged in lively conversations and shared ideas to provide fresh perspectives.
Top Quality for Fair Prices
Buyers were spoiled for choice, with a diverse range of bulls on offer. The top priced Limousin bull fetched $12,000 equalling that of the top Angus bull, showcasing the quality that Balamara strives to achieve. For Limousin, the pedigree of Balamara Now or Never S33 spoke for itself with Wulfs Xtractor, Wulfs Zane and Myers Lady Luck genetically expressed into this top selling powerhouse. Nonetheless, even the lowest priced bull at $5,000, reflected excellent estimated breeding values, demonstrating the commitment to offer value for money sires to buyers. With a healthy Western Australian average price of $7,125, Balamara bulls catered to a wide range of buyers, making quality genetics accessible to all – there was something for everyone.
Michael, John and Misha understand the importance of continuous improvement and evolution. They actively sought feedback from key stakeholders to make next year’s bull sale even better. This commitment to customer satisfaction and a willingness to adapt to changing market dynamics is what sets Balamara apart and ensures that the future of Balamara is bright, promising more remarkable bull sales to come.
The annual Flemington Autumn Production Sale was held on-property at “Flemington Park”, 531 Westwood Rd, Adelong NSW and on Friday 17th March 2023.
40 Limousin & Angus bulls were offered with the Limousin portion topping at $12,500 (twice) and averaging $8,560. Flemington Southern Charm S35, sired by Mandayen King P57, sold for equal top price of $12,500 to Fletcher P/L, a commercial operation based near Holbrook. At 22 months, S35 weighed in at 890 kg with an EMA of 146, IMF of 6.4%, fat scan of 12/7 and scrotal size of 39cm.
Flemington Secret Power S57 was also secured for $12,500 by Morrisvale Limousin Stud from Western Australia. Secret Power was awarded Grand Champion Bull and member of the Interbreed Champion Breeders Group at the Canberra Royal Limousin Feature Show prior to the sale. James and Casey Morris secured the sire for stud duties with the bull appealing to them for his power, performance and for being a black son of Morrisvale Kept Secret, whose semen is no longer available. At 19 months, Secret Power weighed 910kg with an EMA of 137, IMF of 5% and scrotal of 40cm.
The Limousin females topped at $12,000 and averaged $7,860. The top priced female was Flemington Royal Regae, homozygous polled, PTIC and sired by Canadian sire Greenwood Fernando 704F. The Inaugural Pelican Rise Invitational Sale held on the property of Chris and Marilyn Meade at Irrewarra just north of Colac was extremely well attended with more than 80 attendees on the day. All but 2 bulls were sold by the end of the day. The highest price bull was Pelican Rise Sausage Roll at $ 13,000. All of the bulls went into F1 production systems and were mostly purchased by buyers spread between Geelong and Warrnambool. There was a good mix between repeat buyers and new buyers.
Females were mostly purchased locally with one lot going to Tasmania. For our first sale we are very pleased with the results and look forward to 2024. On behalf of our vendors I would like to thank all buyers and under bidders for their support. Also for the members who supported us on Auctions Plus. The local buyers and Stock Agents were very pleased with the set up and the line of animals presented. It is clear that in the South West Victorian region there is a resurgence of Limousin use within the F1 production base and certainly growing interest in using Limousin in Dairy Beef operations.
