The inaugural Flemington Limousin female sale, Adelong, met spirited bidding as buyers from three states, chased some of the top genetics in the breed to highs of $18,000.

A number of new and existing Limousin breeders attended to compete for the catalogue of outcross genetics with quality phenotype.

A total clearance of 11 mature cows sold to a top of $18,000 and an average of $9,045, while heifers continued strongly with all 16 heifers selling, topping at $15,000 to average $6,531.

One stud sire prospect was offered, which sold for $13,500, genetic lots followed with a pick of the herd flush reaching $5,500 and semen packages sold to $220 per unit, and an average of $145 per unit for the six semen packages offered.

A syndicate between South Coast Limousin studs Calderwood and Taurus, both at Calderwood south of Wollongong, purchased the top-priced female, Flemington Unreal G67, a polled apricot daughter of Flemington Bonaza B6.

The female has been part of an embryo transfer program at Flemington, and the new owners want to continue in the same fashion with the prolific donor cow to maximise impact in both their herds.

Calderwood Limousins principal Neil McCracken, said the presence and balance of the young cow and its heifer calf made them the pick of the sale.

Mr McCracken said Unreal G67 added a new cow family to both studs, and would be introduced as Calderwood ramped up its breeding program.

David Malanga, Taurus Limousins, added that the phenotype, soundness, and diverse pedigree of Flemington Unreal G67 attracted him and father Joe.

The lead heifer, Flemington Vixen K14, which has had show ring success as reserve junior champion female at this year’s Sydney Royal, was purchased by Birubi Limousin stud, Boorambola, for $15,000.

Vixen K14 was a red polled daughter of Canadian outcross sire Greenwood Pld Zambuka and from the breed renowned Vixen cow family.

Birubi manager Glenn Trout, felt the lot was the standout heifer and admired her balance and volume combined with Breedplan figures and unique pedigree.

Michael and Mary Parsons, Kia Ora Limousins, Roslyn, purchased Flemington WHV Unreal L8, a seven month old, apricot, homozygous polled daughter of Warrigal High Vision from Flemington Xcel Unreal J8 for $14,000.
Mrs Parsons said Unreal L8 was purchased as a show prospect for granddaughter Estella Manning, and added they admired her for her pedigree and felt she would compliment the Kia Ora herd.

The Parsons also paid $13,500 for black polled stud sire prospect Flemington Ka-Pow K20.

The 17 month son of Oakvale Demandabull, weighed 792 kilograms with raw measurements of 128 square centimetre eye muscle area, seven and 10 millimetres rib and rump fat depth, and 38.5cm scrotal circumference.

Mr Parsons said the bull will be used in both their stud Limousin and commercial Angus herds.

He said Kia Ora has had strong demand for black bulls.

Flemington Limousins principal Donna Robson was happy with the sale, which was above and beyond expectations.

“The sale was put together on the back of success at Limousin National Show and Sale, and Royal shows, as well as the investment in new outcross genetics that have sold well,” she said.

Volume buyers on the day included, A. and L. Ralph, Strathfield, Victoria, paid to $8,000 for three females averaging $7,667, Cooper Rafton, Mt Marshall, Queensland, paid to $9000 for his three averaging $8,333, and J.D. & K.L. Wilkes, Pittsworth, brought three to average $6,333.
