Calrossy Anglican School, Tamworth and the McGilchrist family, Wallabadah, teamed up to exhibit this year’s champion trade carcase, a Limousin steer with a touch of Shorthorn. The steer was by a Brigalow bull bred by Brigalow Limousin Stud, Brigalow F002.
The steer placed third in its class on the hoof, weighing 504kg. It performed even better in the chiller, scoring 86.7 points out of 100. At the P8 it measured 10mm and at the rib 7mm. The carcase weighed 303kg, at the top of the optimum weight range and had a REA of 98cm2.
A Limousin cross prepared by St Joseph’s High School, Aberdeen, was second with 86.5 points. Its carcase weighed 277kg after dressing at 58.6 percent. The carcase measured 11mm at the P8 site and scored 7.8/10 points for REA (89cm2) and maximum points for rib fat (6mm).
