Although Limousin didn’t win the Grand Champion carcase they did perform very strongly in the carcase section of the competition, winning six of the eight broad ribbons on the hook.
Open Light Weight Champion carcase was won by a Limousin from Wellington High School with a score of 90.5 points and also winning a silver medal. It had a dressing percentage of 63.6 percent and a carcase weight of 250kg and scored maximum points for market specifications and saleable meat yield including a measure of 8mm/5mm for P8/rib fat depth. The carcase had a Rib Eye Area (REA) of 97cm2 and was by Allstar Berston B7 from a commercial Limousin cow. The steer was bought by Nathan Fathers Butcher, Dural, for 240c/kg or $943.
Open Light Weight Reserve Champion carcase was awarded to the Grand Champion led steer, exhibited by Jeremy and Philippa Walsh, Ruby Park Limousins, Dubbo, and Don and Sarah Riley, Oakvale Limousins, Tamworth with a score of 90 points. The steer had a dressing percentage of 64.5 percent with a carcase weight of 249.5kg and a REA of 89cm2. It measured 10mm/6mm for P8/Rib Fat and was awarded a silver medal as well as selling for the top price of 1,625 c/kg or $6,289 to Tender Value Meats, Hornsby. He was sired by Manali Fiction F53.
The Open Middle Weight Champion carcase was exhibited by Clark Livestock Company, Top Shelf Limousins, Garland with a score of 91.5 points. The carcase dressed at 60.5 percent and weighed in above the optimum weight range at 289kg. It had a REA of 97cm2 and measured a fat depth of 10mm/9mm at P8/rib and was awarded a silver medal. The steer was bought by Wingham Beef Exports for 250 c/kg or $1,195. It was sired by Premier Dodgeram A78.
The Open Middle Weight Reserve Champion carcase was exhibited by Don and Sarah Riley, Oakvale Limousins, Tamworth and scored 91 points. The carcase dressed at 61.2 percent and weighed 300kg. It had a REA of 122cm2 and had a P8/rib fat depth of 13mm/6mm, winning a silver medal. The steer was sired by Manali Fiction F53 from an Oakvale cow and was bought by Wingham Beef Exports for 340c/kg or $1,666.
Champion Schools Carcase was won by The Scots School, Bathurst and Terry and Bev Denniss, Jordenspring Limousins, Mudgee with a score 91.5 points. The carcase weighed 332.5kg and dressed at 60.9 percent. It had a REA of 114cm2 and measured 11mm/8mm at the P8/rib fat sites and was awarded a gold medal. The steer was sired by Jordenspring Bronzespring.
Reserve Champion Schools Carcase was awarded to Wee Waa High School with a score of 91 points. The carcase dressed at 60.1 percent and weighed 253kg. It had a REA of 88cm2 and had a P8/rib fat depth of 9mm/5mm and was also awarded a gold medal. The steer was sired by Allstar Berston B7.
